Upper Mustang trek aim is to explore the medieval town of Lo Mangtang and experience the culture that has not changed for centuries. The Mustang trek starts from Jomsom and to get there you take a short but spectacular fight from Pokhara through the Kali Gandagi gorge, the deepest in the world. Jomsom is a tourist town with many small lodges and hotels. From here you follow the famous Kali Gandagi River upstream, sometime walking on the river bed itself to Kagbeni where you will enter the Restricted Area. During the 4 day trek north to Lo Mangtang, you will cross passes between 3500 and 4000m, see all of Mustang's important villages, monasteries, chortens and distinctively colourful scenery and, stay in guesthouse run by a very friendly Mustangi family. On the fourth day you are in Lo Mangtang and the view of the walled city can be seen as you look down from a hill. Spend a day here exploring amongst its brightly painted houses along the narrow alleyways. You may wish to visit old monasteries or the amchi museum and amchi school and see how traditional Tibetan doctor practice. You might even be invited to the palace by the king for a tea. There are also places to see beyond Lo Mangtang and the caves dwellings are worth a visit. The return journey is four days to Kagbeni via Ghami and Samar.
To enter Upper Mustang you have to pay a Restricted Area permit of US$500 per person which is valid for 10 days. Thereafter it is US$50 for each additional day. Our trek is designed for 10 days in Mustang but by adding another 2 days, you will be able to see and experience much more. There are already motorable road from Geling to Lo Mangtang and by hiring a jeep, we can have those extra days to spend in and around Lo Mangtang.
