Mount Makalu at 8481m is the fifth highest mountain in the world and is considered one of the toughest peaks to climb. It sits isolated amongst 16 other peaks and is located 22 Km to the east of Everest and 80 Km west of Kanchenjunga. It was first climbed in 1955 by a French expedition and remarkably, most of the expedition members and a Sherpa Sardar made to the summit within three perfect climbing days. In 1992 this region was declared Makalu Barun National Park to protect the richest concentration of plants and animal life in Nepal. The lower and middle Arun valley is populated by mainly Rais, Limbus, Tamangs and Newars with scattered settlements of Sherpa and Lhomi further up towards the Barun valley. Like Kanchenjunga, this region is just waiting to be explored by more adventurous trekkers.
