Our trek to the Makalu Base Camp starts after a short flight from Kathmandu to the airstrip at Tumlingtar, just above Arun River. The route follows the lower Arun valley, through pretty terraced farmland and a number of delightful villages, before climbing to cross the Shipton La (4229m) and into the Barun river valley. From here, you will encounter only a few Sherpa or Lhomi settlements as the trail follows the steep Barun river gorge. Along the approach to the fifth highest peak in the world are the towering granite cliffs capped with glaciers opening to magnificent views of Makalu massifs, Everest and Lhotse. We have arrived at Sherson (4500m), the base camp area for Makalu which is just 3km away. We spend a day here and take a trip up to a ridge at 5000m for a view of Makalu and Everest. We retrace the route for the return journey back to Tumlingtar, catching up with any missed opportunities along the away. Not many trekkers make their way here but this nature’s treasure is just waiting to be explored.
